We actively promote Hong Kong as a centre for major international sports events. “M” Mark System was launched in November 2004, with the aim to gain greater participation and support from the commercial sector as well as the community for the hosting of major international sports events, in order to nurture more sustainable major international sports events in Hong Kong. This will not only give a chance for the local athletes to compete on home ground, but also give Hong Kong audience more opportunities to enjoy top level performance sports and to cultivate a sporting culture in the community. “M” Mark is an icon for spectacular and exciting events, and is only awarded to the major international sports events held in Hong Kong.
“M” Mark System
To encourage more major international sports events to be held in Hong Kong, the Government announced various measures in August 2025 to further enhance the “M” Mark System. These measures include adjusting the vetting and selection criteria, focusing on supporting world-class “major sport events,” adopting a fixed application cycle for accepting and processing applications for "exhibition matches/tournaments", enhancing the vetting procedures and application requirements, as well as strengthening the monitoring and reporting mechanisms. By refining the vetting criteria and funding mechanism, the new round of refined measures aims to optimise the use of resources and maximise the benefits of government funding. At the same time, it ensures the quality and attractiveness of "M" Mark events, strengthens events' appeal to spectators and visitors as well as enhances economic benefits.
